Transformative Adaptation of Mediterranean Dry Farming Systems Using Water Harvesting Techniques

This call focuses on employing water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought conditions in arid and semi-arid environments, aligning with Innovation Action (IA) guidelines.

IDConsortium

The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) invites innovative proposals under the theme of transformative adaptation of Mediterranean dry farming systems.

This call focuses on employing water harvesting techniques to address extreme drought conditions in arid and semi-arid environments, aligning with Innovation Action (IA) guidelines.

Challenge:

In light of the latest IPCC report and the escalating impact of climate change, the Mediterranean basin faces significant agricultural challenges due to water scarcity. The region’s agriculture, predominantly reliant on rainfed systems, is increasingly vulnerable to prolonged droughts and extreme weather, necessitating innovative adaptations for sustainable food production and water management.

Scope:

This call aims to integrate traditional and modern hydro-technologies to develop resilient and sustainable dry-farming systems. Proposals should focus on implementing water harvesting techniques, utilizing drought-resistant species, and adopting circular economy principles to enhance soil health, water efficiency, and carbon sequestration.

Objectives:

  • To innovate water harvesting systems inspired by ancestral hydro-technologies.
  • To create sustainable agricultural models that incorporate underutilized species and improve water use efficiency.
  • To develop value chains and business models adaptable to environmental and market changes, with a focus on soil health and environmental sustainability.
  • To ensure solutions are practical, affordable, and tailored to the needs of smallholders, with an emphasis on gender equality and economic opportunities.

Expected Impacts:

  • Establishment of large demonstration sites in arid and semi-arid zones to showcase project effectiveness.
  • Innovation in water harvesting techniques, revitalizing ancestral hydro-technologies for modern applications.
  • Development of new products and value chains for human consumption and animal feed, emphasizing underutilized species.
  • Significant improvements in water use efficiency and soil health, contributing to the resilience of dry farming systems in the Mediterranean region.

About PRIMA:

PRIMA is a long-term partnership aimed at fostering joint research and innovation in the Mediterranean region to address challenges such as water scarcity, sustainable agriculture, and food security. Through collaborative efforts, PRIMA supports the transition towards more sustainable, inclusive, and healthier Mediterranean societies, contributing to the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Participation and Collaboration:

Proposals should adopt a multi-actor approach, engaging farmers, researchers, policymakers, and communities to ensure the relevance and viability of proposed solutions. Collaboration with ongoing projects within PRIMA, H2020, Horizon Europe, and the “A Soil Deal for Europe” mission is encouraged to leverage existing knowledge and resources.

Submission Guidelines:

Innovative proposals addressing the call’s objectives and scope should be submitted in accordance with PRIMA’s guidelines by the specified deadlines. Projects are expected to produce tangible outcomes, including a joint policy brief, fostering policy development and stakeholder engagement across the Mediterranean region.

This call for proposals represents a critical opportunity for advancing sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean region. By integrating traditional knowledge with modern innovation, the initiative aims to transform dry farming systems, enhancing their resilience to climate change and ensuring sustainable water management and food security for future generations.
