SME Avecom, one of the technology providers for the RUSTICA project
Within the Rustica project, the SME Avecom is one of the technology providers, responsible for the production of microbial protein (MP) from CAP waters. The protein-rich dried biomass is used as a building block for organic fertilizers.

To assess microbial protein production from several CAP fermentation media as source of carbon source, N, P, K and micronutrients, Avecom is mainly involved in RUSTICA’s WP5 for lab-scale testing and in WP6 for pilot-scale testing at the region of Pays de la Loire.
Avecom was founded 25 years ago by professor Willy Verstraete as a spin-out of the University of Ghent (Belgium). Nowadays, Avecom is an independent and experienced SME, active in process development. Avecom holds several patents and is an experienced and reliable partner that has successfully marketed several products and processes. The company has been focusing on the development of microbial protein for more than 10 years, mainly for feed applications. In this context, a process called VALPROMIC for the sustainable production of animal feed was even scaled up to a demo plant.
The staff in charge of the lab-scale and pilot-scale tests are Kim Windey (Operations Director of Avecom, holding a Master in Bioscience Engineering and having more than 17 years of experience), Mariane Van Wambeke (Project Manager, holding a Master in Agricultural Engineering and having more than 36 years of experience) and Nele Driesen (Junior Project Engineer, holding a Master in Bioscience Engineering, graduated in 2021).

In preparation of the pilot-scale tests, the 3 Belgian technology providers of the Rustica project, OWS, UGent and Avecom, closely work together and frequently have meetings to discuss optimal integration of their technologies.
