Who is BioSabor?

BioSabor S.A.T. is an ecological fruit and vegetable company located in the southeast of Spain. We are in the province of Almería next to Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

In BioSabor we are aware of the environmental impact of agricultural activity. Even so, our ECOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE is one of the most sustainable methods on the planet, by which we keep the nutritional properties of our organic fruits and vegetables intact while preventing environmental damage. We accomplish this by avoiding synthetic chemicals in cultivation, in coherence with our business culture and practice of “Creating Shared Value”.

We reinforced our commitment to food sustainability in 2017 by joining the RedSostal network of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which promotes the integral sustainability of the Spanish food industry. In 2019 we committed ourselves to the United Nations Global Compact and aligned BioSabor’s Strategic and Sustainability Plan with the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Our ecological agricultural activity involves the solar greenhouses of our partners on more than 315 hectares of land, with which we achieve a positive reduction of CO2 emissions.

There is a much higher density of plants inside the greenhouses than there would be outdoors, and with so much foliage the plants absorb a significant amount of atmospheric CO2 and use it to carry out the photosynthetic processes of growth and fruit production.

We estimate that the 40,000 hectares of Solar Greenhouses that comprise the protected agriculture of the Almeria agricultural sector are capable of neutralizing the amount of CO2 produced daily by 250,000 cars. The 315 hectares of BioSabor cultivation can therefore counteract the gases emitted daily by an estimated 2,625 vehicles.

If there is one thing we do well in Almeria, it is optimizing water resources. Almeria is considered one of the driest provinces in Spain, where water scarcity is a limiting factor for agricultural activity. That is why in the BioSabor packaging warehouse and in our partners’ farms, various techniques are used to optimize the use of water and to make the most of rainwater.

In addition, BioSabor has a Waste Management System included in our Quality Management System, both in the packaging plant and in production facilities. We minimize food waste so as to do our part to eradicate hunger in society. In 2017 BioSabor was selected by AECOC (the Spanish Association of Manufacturers and Distributors) as a “Zero Food Waste Company”.

BioSabor is committed to the mission to conserve resources and use them efficiently. Given the activity of the company, food waste is not a trivial matter. We position ourselves as a Zero Food Waste Company by ensuring that food waste does not occur in any production process.

Our objective is to optimize the planning and execution of the value chain so that waste does not occur in any phass or link of the chain. In this way, 100% of the food waste is reused, which contributes to a circular economy. As an ecological company, we utilize the most advanced technologies on the market, thus avoiding in our facilities the need to treat crops with chemicals. Moreover, we take preventive steps to make the greenhouses as aseptic as possible. Maximum care is taken at the moment of harvesting and monitoring products, so that there are no losses due to pests or disease, which also maximizes the yield of each plantation.

Other farm wastage, such as plastics and auxiliary materials, is collected from the farms and taken to authorized recycling centers when its useful life has ended. We recycle 100% of the plastics that shelter our crops, insofar as their material quality makes it possible to reuse them to build new greenhouses, and also to transform them into other plastic products.

In the field, significant amounts of vegetable waste are generated from pruning and harvesting. Once cultivation is finished, all plant residue and auxiliary elements such as biodegradable twine are immediately removed and transported in containers to a composting center to be transformed into fertilizer that maintains the sustainability of the soil in the greenhouses. Our goal is to reuse plant residue and biodegradable auxiliary elements as fertilizer on farms.

All waste from organic farms is managed responsibly, without causing any harm to the environment.
